Code of conduct for managers

As a manager, my purpose is to serve the greater good by bringing people and resources together to create value that no single individual can build alone. Therefore, I will seek a course that enhances the value my enterprise can create for society over the long term. I recognize my decisions can have far reaching consequences that affect the well being of individuals inside and outside my enterprise, today and in the future. As a I reconcile the interests of different constituencies, I will face difficult choices.

Therefore I promise:

  • I will act with utmost integrity and pursue my work in an ethical manner.
  • I will safeguard the interests of my shareholders, co-workers, customers, and the society in which we operate.
  • I will manage my enterprise in good faith, guarding against decisions and behavior that advance my own narrow ambitions but harm the enterprise and the societies it serves.
  • I will understand and uphold, both in letter and in spirit, the laws and contracts governing my own conduct and that of my enterprise.
  • I will take responsibility for my actions, and I will represent the performance and risks of my enterprise accurately and honestly.
  • I will develop both myself and other managers under my supervision so that the profession continues to grow and contribute to the well being of society.
  • I will strive to create sustainable economic, social, and environmental prosperity worldwide.
  • I will be accountable to my peers and they will be accountable to me for living by this oath.
This oath I make freely, and upon my honor.

Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies!

"Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life." (John 12:24) Jesus' image of the wheatgrain symbolises not just our mortal life, but the many times we die a little before our death: with every parting, moving of house or job, loss of a friend or dear one, with any loss of property. To cling to what we have lost is to bury our life in the past. Even the most painful loss can be a new beginning.

Lord, you sometimes ask us to face the death to our own desires and ego in the daily contradictions and rebuffs of our long lifetimes. There too the sacrifice of the ego enables us to bear much fruit.

The softest pillow is a clear conscience

I first heard about this quote in an interview with Mr.Narayanamurthy, the founder chairman of Infosys on NDTV. Since then, I am trying to reach that level. Some days, at the end of the day I am almost there, when my conscience is very clear at the end of the day, and I sleep well. Some days, I end up doing things, which I dont really intend to do. I have created more enemies by saying 'Yes' when I really want to say 'No'. It could be a cousin, who is seeking my help to find a better job for his son, or a distant relative who wants to make use of my connections to sell his products, or it could be a friend pouring that next drink, which you really dont like to have, or it could be the boss, who is proposing something which is not convincing to you. Some times I feel as if, life is all about making choices.

By saying 'Yes', when I really want to say 'No', actually I am going against my conscience. By trying to achieve a clear conscience at the end of the day, I am learning the art of saying 'No' to the things I really dont want to do, and I am learing to say 'Yes' to things ehich I really want to do, with utmost conviction.
