Dear Sir,

How are you ?

I wish to inform you that I passed my PMP exam today from Dubai.

 Let me also take this opportunity to personally thank you & Antony for the splendid training given on your website and support for PMP process given by emails and telephone. I have used every resource you provided on the site. I wanted to attend your class in Cochin also, but couldnt snchronize the timing with my 30 day leave.

Earlier this year, it is after watching your podcast that I decided to do PMP. I had asked you in an email for your opinion on it and you had said "Nobody has ever  regretted being a PMP"!

I dont regret now. It is one certification that has influenced my view on work and life. Any professional benefit would be a bonus.

Thank you again,

Yours Sincerely,

Dinesh

The primary notion of usability and user interface design is that an object

task
Easier to learn—operation can be learned by observing the object
More satisfying to use

Code of conduct for managers

As a manager, my purpose is to serve the greater good by bringing people and resources together to create value that no single individual can build alone. Therefore, I will seek a course that enhances the value my enterprise can create for society over the long term. I recognize my decisions can have far reaching consequences that affect the well being of individuals inside and outside my enterprise, today and in the future. As a I reconcile the interests of different constituencies, I will face difficult choices.

Therefore I promise:

  • I will act with utmost integrity and pursue my work in an ethical manner.
  • I will safeguard the interests of my shareholders, co-workers, customers, and the society in which we operate.
  • I will manage my enterprise in good faith, guarding against decisions and behavior that advance my own narrow ambitions but harm the enterprise and the societies it serves.
  • I will understand and uphold, both in letter and in spirit, the laws and contracts governing my own conduct and that of my enterprise.
  • I will take responsibility for my actions, and I will represent the performance and risks of my enterprise accurately and honestly.
  • I will develop both myself and other managers under my supervision so that the profession continues to grow and contribute to the well being of society.
  • I will strive to create sustainable economic, social, and environmental prosperity worldwide.
  • I will be accountable to my peers and they will be accountable to me for living by this oath.
This oath I make freely, and upon my honor.

Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies!

"Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life." (John 12:24) Jesus' image of the wheatgrain symbolises not just our mortal life, but the many times we die a little before our death: with every parting, moving of house or job, loss of a friend or dear one, with any loss of property. To cling to what we have lost is to bury our life in the past. Even the most painful loss can be a new beginning.

Lord, you sometimes ask us to face the death to our own desires and ego in the daily contradictions and rebuffs of our long lifetimes. There too the sacrifice of the ego enables us to bear much fruit.

Subject: [project-management-consulting] Home Based Businesses - The Dawning of a New Era

A home based business operation is the most sought after career and income alternative in the world. With world economies crumbling, the out of control rising cost of health care and our retirement savings in jeopardy, millions of people around the world are turning to alternative sources of income in hopes of securing a future for themselves and their families.
This has opened up the doorway for thousands of Home Based Business opportunities. Home Based Businesses can and are providing that security for many. However, these businesses are not always a walk in the park and are not for everyone.
If you are interested in starting a business there are FOUR things to consider:
' Choosing the right company with the right product or service that best fits you and your personality. You must be passionate and start with a solid foundation.
' You must have some resources in order to promote and grow your business or you will wither on the vine quickly.
' You must possess or learn leadership in order to develop the skills to retain a customer base and a strong and productive team in the future. Remember you are the company owner, Not a Rep. for your organization.
' Finally, you need time and time management. Too many people think that after they join a company, money will start flying out of their computer at them, and they will not have to work at their business.
Home based businesses offer a chance for average people with little experience to become legitimate business owners, so be careful because this terrific opportunity if not taken seriously can lead to disappointment, failure and even financial stress causing you to quit and venture elsewhere.
My best advice to anyone that is starting a home based business is to invest in education and training to learn the proper skills to successfully operate, promote and grow your business so that it will become a profitable and enjoyable experience that will last a lifetime.

#2 Comparing the planning process group of PMBOK V3 and V4

The PMBOK third edition has 21 processes in the planning process group, where as V4 has only 20 processes in the planning group;

Here are the mapping of planning processes between V3 and V4. Most of the processes remain unchanged. The names got changed to more of a 'verb-noun' combination. Plan purchases and acquisions, Plan Contracting processes of V3, got replaced with 'Plan procurements', which resulted in the reduction of planning group processes from 21 to 20.

Here is the mapping;

  • Develop project management plan -> Develop project management plan
  • Scope definition -> Define scope
  • Create WBS (work breakdown structure) - Create WBS
  • Activity definition -> Define activities
  • Activity sequencing -> Sequence activities
  • Activity resource estimating -> Estimate activity resources
  • Activity duration estimating -> Estimate activity durations
  • Schedule development -> Develop schedule
  • Cost estimating -> Estimate costs
  • Cost budgeting -> Determine budgets
  • Quality planning -> Plan quality
  • Human resource planning -> Develop human resource plan
  • Communications planning -> plan communications
  • Risk management planning -> plan risk management
  • Risk identification -> Identify risks
  • Qualitative risk analysis -> Qualitative risk analysis
  • Quantitative risk analysis -> Quantitative risk analysis
  • Risk response planning -> Plan risk responses
  • Plan purchases and acquisitions - > No mapping to 4th edition
  • Plan contracting -> No mapping to 4th edition

example of positive risk : iPhone strangles AT&T network;

What is positive risk?.

Generally we tend to think only negative about risks. Positive risk is an opportunity, which if not exploited can result in loss of opportunity or business.

When AT&T and Apple joined hands, it resulted in increased traffic and business and it is choking the network, and if this is not managed well, can result in lost opportunity for both AT&T and Apple.

#1 Comparing PMBOK V3 and V4

Very often during training, I get this question these days;

"If I prepare for the exam based on PMBOK V3, and write the current exam, will I pass?". Yes, still you can pass. For that matter, even if you prepare based on V2, still you may pass, as the crux of the body of knowledge have not changed much, and it cannot change as well. The key changes are in the structuring of the document, and it there are some deletions and additions to improve clarity. For the benefit of all, who is looking forward to bridge the gap between V3 and V4, quickly, I am planning a series of posts in this blog. Hope it will benefit some one, some where.

Here we go!

PMBOK v3 had 44 processes, where as PMBOK v4 has only 42 processes. The 9 knowledge areas remain the same as;

  • Integration management
  • Time management
  • Cost management
  • Scope management
  • Quality management
  • Risk management
  • Human resource management
  • Communications management
  • Procurement management

The process groups remain the same as;

  • Initiation
  • Planning
  • Execution
  • Monitoring and controlling
  • Closing

Under Initiation, as per V3, we had two processes;

  • Develop project charter
  • Define high level scope

In V4, this is changed to;

  • Develop project charter
  • Identify stakeholders

Subject: Recognizing More Than Just Stars

_Weekly tips to help you and your colleagues become more effective and
respected leaders. _
=RECOGNIZING MORE THAN JUST STARS=
Think recognition should be reserved for top-notch workers who go "above and
beyond the call of duty"? If so, there's a good chance you're missing
opportunities to positively interact with the mainstream employees who are
the backbone your organization's success (not to mention your success as a
leader). These are the people who, day-in-day-out, meet expectations without
doing the outstanding things that attract attention. As a result, they are
often overlooked and taken for granted.

Sure, it's easy to ignore these folks. After all, they're just doing their
jobs … just doing what they're paid to do. But think about what would happen
if they didn't. Would you be able to get the results you want
and need? Would the superior members of your team be able to do outstanding
things without the support of the "backbone"? Probably not! Therefore,_
it's critical to appreciate and recognize those who maintain good, solid
performance over time_. Pay attention to these people. Support them. Coach
them. Be accessible when they need you. THANK THEM!

It's often the small things you do that make a big difference in building
people up to become even better performers. And that goes double for team
members who have performance problems. Sometimes, leaders assume that
employees with performance deficiencies in one area should not be recognized
when they do other things right. That's a big mistake! Even people with
problems are doing some things right. And each time they do provides you an
opportunity to build their confidence and reinforce what they've done well.
You see, bad work does NOT cancel out good work. They are separate actions
that should be dealt with separately – and appropriately. Do that and you'll
prove that you care about total performance … about helping everyone become
the best they can be.

Poor stakeholder management !

Who is a stakeholder?. As per PMBOK, "Any one, who is affected positively or negatively by doing a project, or by not doing a project is a stakeholder". In this case (delayed road repair), who are all the stakeholders;

  • The citizens of Kochi
  • The Kochi corporation
  • The surrounding panchayaths
  • The passengers
  • The vehicle owners
  • The minister of roads and transport (P.J Joseph)
  • The collector of kochi
  • The road works contractors
  • Member of the legislative assembly (MLA)
  • Member of PArliament (K.V Thomas)

Every time i see roads like this, i feel insulted and cheated by our leaders, who are supposed to serve us,

Sent from my Nokia phone

should we tolerate this kind of inefficiency and insult

Iam a law abiding citizen of India and pay all my taxes including the road tax on time, and this is the kind of service iam getting back. The picture shows the plight of the road in kochi, which connects cheranellore, a busy suburb to the kochi city. Our member of parliament k.v thomas, the mla and the state road transport minister p.j thomas, who got cleared recently from a sexual harassment case do not seem to care. Should we still vote for these inefficient guys in the future.

@ creative best :-)

After a two week training spree, I am back to my garage converted office, where me and Antony are working on a project which is really interesting. Last two weeks I came across some very interesting people with different cultures, and most importantly I came across the unknown facets of some very old friends, who are known to me for years together. This time, me and Joshi had all the free time under the sun to discuss about 'Jesus', and we spent hours on the final day of the training (after the training), discussing and debating, and then proceeded to do some last minute shopping. We were supposed to go to 'Lulu' super market but I changed my mind half way through to go to the curio shop attached to the church.
At the shop, a young gentleman was busy with his computer. My last visit to this shop was around 15 years back, and at that time it was run by an old couple. Assuming that the gentleman at the shop is their son, I could not resist from enquiring about the old graceful couple. I opened up a communication channel with a 'Hello', to the young gentle man, breaking his concentration. What a coincidence....this young gentle man 'Cecil' is from my same village 'Varapuzha' in the state of Kerala of India....and we were meeting for the first time at Muscat!. God's ways!. We had a long and interesting discussion on Bible, the way to read it and follow it etc...and towards the end, he gifted me with a bible to read while travelling, and I did read it.
Here is a passage from the bible which caught my attention;
" I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go. I will counsel you with my eye upon you".
God's ways are different!. Thank you Jesus !
